Smart energy and automation
Once generation and storage are in place, the next gain usually comes from timing rather than hardware. Running the right load at the right moment turns surplus that would have been wasted into useful work.
Worth knowing
Automation is worth adding when there are genuinely flexible loads to control. On a small system with no deferrable demand, it adds complexity without much return.
Use surplus instead of exporting it
On a sunny afternoon a well-sized system often generates more than the property is using and more than the battery can absorb. That surplus is worth very little exported and quite a lot if it heats water or runs a pump.
Control logic watches state of charge and available generation, then brings flexible loads on while the energy is free to you.
Protect the system from itself
Automation also works defensively. Logic can prevent too many heavy loads starting at once, hold the grid in reserve below a set state of charge and release it again once the battery has recovered.
That keeps the system inside the envelope it was designed for instead of relying on the household to manage it.
Local control, not cloud dependence
We build control logic that runs on the site using Node-RED, with MQTT and ESPHome for device integration. It keeps working when the internet does not, and it keeps operational data local.
Our own Langebaan office runs this way, which is where most of it gets tested before it goes anywhere else.

Common questions
- Do I need automation to have a good system?
- No. A well-sized system without automation works well. Automation earns its place when you have flexible loads worth scheduling or a system operating close to its limits.
- What happens if the internet goes down?
- The control logic runs on the site, so scheduling and protection continue. Remote visibility is what you lose, not the behaviour of the system.
