No grid or weak grid

Off-grid energy

Off grid is an operating strategy rather than a larger battery. The design is set by the least productive season, the longest run of poor weather and the loads that cannot be deferred.

Worth knowing

Off-grid systems require the user to work with the system. Load management, seasonal awareness and a maintenance routine are part of the design, not optional extras.

Size for winter, not for summer

A system that performs beautifully in January can fall short in June. Off-grid sizing works from the worst realistic production period and an agreed autonomy target, which is the number of days the site can run without meaningful generation.

Raising that target raises cost quickly, so it is a decision to make with the numbers in front of you.

Load management is part of the system

Off grid, the cheapest kilowatt hour is the one you do not use. Water heating, pumping and other flexible loads are scheduled to run when generation is available rather than whenever they are switched on.

We build that logic into the system so it happens automatically rather than depending on someone remembering.

Generator integration and redundancy

Most off-grid sites keep a generator for the exceptional week. Integrating it properly means it starts when it is genuinely needed, charges efficiently and stops again, rather than running as a habit.

We also look at what happens if a single component fails, because there is no grid to fall back on.

Questions

Common questions

Is off grid cheaper than connecting to the grid?
Sometimes, where a connection is distant or a quoted connection fee is very high. It is rarely cheaper than an existing working connection, because you are paying for the resilience the grid would otherwise provide.
